Rhubarb & Custard Cowl

Sizes and Materials List

Needles: 5mm circular needles with 40cm cable
knitters darning needle
scissors
one stitch marker

Hand-made label or wooden button

 

Yarn: I’ve used hand dye yard from sewhappycreative in Aran weight (200g) but you can substitute for any Aran yarn plain, multi coloured, self striping or maybe use up scraps to create a unique cowl. You can knit this in a few evenings, and it makes a very quick last minute gift. You can purchase an ad free pdf from love crafts.com 

Pattern size of approx. 12 by 11.5 inches

Wash care instructions: machine washable 30 degrees, cool tumble dry, no iron, no dry clean



Colours used in order:

Pink, Cream fleck


Abbreviations

Skill Level: beginner  
St: stitch
K: knit
P: purl
garter stitch (knit every row)

Pattern Instructions

This pattern is written in U.K. terms 


Let’s start

cast on 100 stitches using 5mm circular knitting needles in your first colour, I’ve used pink. I use a cast on method called cable cast on, but you can use which ever you find easier.

We will be using Moss stitch for the first 5 rows. 

Join in the round, being careful not to twist your stiches. I lay my needles onto a flat surface with the stitches facing on the outside.  

I’ve added a few photos below to show you the joining in the round method I use.

 

 

Join in the round

 

Knit your first stitch, then pass the original first stitch on your right needle over the stitch you have just knitted. This gives a very even join. You can tug the original stitch tighter to close the small gap when you have knitted a few rows. Place a stitch marker on the first stitch of this round so that you know where the starting point is.


Pass your first knit stitch over to join


Place your stitch marker to mark the BOR


Continue to K1, P1 (Moss stitch) until you reach the beginning. Continue to use the same colour yarn and knit 5 rows, then knit 5 rows moss stitch. This is the pattern repeat.

Change colour to cream fleck and knit 5 rows, knit 5 rows moss stich, knit 5 rows, change colour.

Continue in the pattern set until you have 75 rows in total

Pattern: 

5 rows Moss stitch

5 rows knit

5 rows Moss stitch

Note: for my test cowl I knitted 20 rows in one colour, repeat, my second follows 15 rows in one colour 


Cast off in either moss stitch, knit or purl, depending on how you want the cast off edge to look. Sew in the ends securely.

Denim Daisy Granny Square construction

And here it is all finished last Friday, just in time for a heat wave! Seriously I do love this jumper and it fits so well with a white t shirt underneath, jeans and flip flops. cables without the cables (Birch Trees scarf)

Earlier this year I came across this lovely Birch Trees Scarf knitting pattern over at Hand Knitted Things . Its one of those patterns that you just have to try because its so pretty and very practical and looks far more intricate and complicated than the 4 row pattern suggests. I like to call it cables without the cables, such a clever pattern thank you Julia Marsh.  I'm knitting mine on vintage no. 7 needles (kindly given to me by my mother-in-law) and using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino charcoal out of my yarn stash that was meant to be for Ian's scarf! shh don't tell him! I use DB yarn all the time, picking up bargains in John Lewis and eBay but its the first time I've knitted with Cashmerino, and it isn't going to be the last. It gives you great stitch definition and the softest yarn ever, I love it. So here is my scarf in progress. It has been sitting in my car waiting to be loved again after I accidentally knitted the moss stitch border wrong. I know ho

traffic jam (crochet simple granny triangle shawl)

I got stuck in the office on Monday night, not the best of situations but this estate I work on does get congested frequently and not helped by lorries breaking down blocking one lane of two. Anyway all was not lost because I'd had a new yarn delivery that morning and I needed an excuse to stop and crochet. And this is how this granny shawl got its name. Isn't it gorgeous? It's crochet in the new Sirdar Colourwheel DK yarn. On first inspection I wasn't that taken with it, but now I love it. No more colour changes, yipee.
